Jambiani Porch
I´ve been enjoying greatly writing songs on the porch where I´m staying. I wouldn´t say that the “Journeys #3” EP is shaping up yet, but the first ideas are growing – little seeds. Mainly I´m enjoying taking in some of the local rhythm – musically but more so in terms of the feeling – and I´m looking forward to seeing how that interprets in my writing.
The house is on the beach in Jambiani. There´s a palm tree which the kitchen has been built around, and from time to time a coconut falls down, meaning that you have to take a little care when dozily walking through to prepare a morning coffee. On the porch you can see out to sea, and it is fascinating to watch the locals work with the sea, and the depth of their relationship with it.
It´s been a busy time so far, so songwriting time has been stolen in moments. But it doesn´t concern me, I know they are in me, and I know they will come. Songs are a little bit like pregnancy I think – they will always come, but only when it is time. They need to form, shape, feed, exist in the pre-conscious dream world for long enough to being delivered.
Last night I played my first show in Stone Town at La Taperia and again experienced incredible hospitality. Next stop is playing a show in Kendwa and in some ways it reminds me of my early rock n roll days – trying to find a car to rent, hustling a price, trying to get a mixer from one place, a mic stand from another…..and no doubt getting beautifully lost en route. In any case, I´m looking forward to a drive. The journey continues…..
